デス声が好きか嫌いか、って聞かれたら…、まぁ、何と言うか。
得意ではない。
但し、その表現方法は多いに「アリ」だと思っている。
極端な話、アコースティック・ギターに対してのディストーションがかかったエレクトリック・ギターみたいなもんじゃないか、と。
歌詞で表現できない苦しみ、悲しみ、そういったネガティブな感情をこういったデス声に乗せる、という手法は原始的なだけに凄く人間臭くもある。
一番最初にデス声を披露したのは誰だか知らないけど、それでも、まさか、ここまで市民権を得るとは流石に思わなかったよ。
まぁ、そんな事言ったら…スラッシュ・メタルだって、市民権を得るなんて、思ってもみなかったもんな。
Metallicaがあんな世間を騒がすぐらいのバンドになるって、デビュー時に誰が予想したよ？！
あぁ、また話が変な方向へと行ってしまったけど……
兎に角Opeth。
正直、最初にOpethを聴いた時、Paradise Lostを思い出してしまったんだよねぇ。ちょっと違った方向へ行ってしまってからはParadise Lostの方はチェックしていないんだけど。
Opethの新作、まだ買っていないんだけど、The Flower KingsのRoine Stoltはこう言っている。


The new Opeth - Watershed does include cookiemonster growls but probably just two short sections -
maybe 30 seconds altogether .
Mikeal Akerfelt's normal singing voice is very nice,relaxed and natural.
The rest is tight progressive metal but even more than that lots of melancholy acoustic fingerpicking pieces, that any fan of Crimson,Genesis or Camel could appreciate.
The keyboards are all vintage with plenty mellotron and NO hi tech digital synth that you'll find in the generic progmetal a la Symphony X or Dream Theater .

面倒臭いから訳さないけど、兎に角、気に入っているらしいですよ？
この"The Roundhouse Tapes"も、そんなにデス声は気にならなかったな。
良い意味で70年代のエッセンスをたっぷりと含んだヘヴィー・メタル。
そんなOpethのこのライブ盤。
トラックリストには書いていないけど、イントロがある。
まぁ、これには驚いた。

Popol Vuhの"Through the Pain to Heaven"が使用されている。
ドイツ勢は全くチンプンカンプンなんだけど、Popol Vuhは好き。
そういえば、OpethのMikael Akerfeltと仲の良いSteven Wilsonも"Nosferatu"をPorcupine Treeで使っていたっけ？"Up the Downstairs"だよね。
このPopol Vuhの"Nosferatu"はヴェルナー・ヘルツォーク監督による映画「ノスフェラトゥ」のサントラ。
とはいえ、たかがサントラなどと言ってはいけない。
